Last week was historic for the LA Y, Sylvia Lydia - -

On March 25th, alongside the Office of the Mayor, I was proud to announce the largest initiative in our LA Y 133-year history. A ground-breaking private-public venture, Partnership for Education and Career Success addresses the pressing academic, social and health needs of children in our urban neighborhoods.

Leveraging a unique "cradle to career" model, which supports kids from infancy through adulthood, our LA Y will facilitate programs that close the achievement gap, address summer learning loss, bridge health disparities, create havens for teens, increase community/civic engagement, prepare kids for college, and provide workforce training to prepare students for a career. We've successfully piloted these initiatives in Crenshaw, South Los Angeles, Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles and Southeast Los Angeles. Now, with Mayor Garcetti's support, these year-round opportunities will be accessible to at-risk children and their families in urban communities throughout Los Angeles.

The timing of our announcement is perfect is as it precedes one of my most favorite national Y events that focuses on the health and well-being of children - Healthy Kids Day®. This year's theme, "Put More In, Get More Kid Out," really complements our recent announcement by recognizing the need to invest in our kids now to improve our communities’ futures.

I hope you'll join us on Saturday, April 25th to experience the Healthy Kids Day celebration in your neighborhood. FREE and fun for the whole family, our branches will host exciting Healthy Kids Day activities, ranging from 5K runs, to games, giveaways, demonstrations and more to highlight the importance of staying happy, healthy and active. You'll even get to learn about our terrific kids programs and summer camp registration. But, don't worry if you’re busy on the 25th; some of our branches are hosting Healthy Kids Day on alternate dates.

I'm thrilled that Mayor Garcetti is partnering with us to ensure all kids in Los Angeles have the opportunity to grow, learn and thrive. And, as always, I want to thank YOU. It is your generous support, after all, that enables the LA Y to strengthen our community.

Let's celebrate this special milestone and the incredible kids in our lives at Healthy Kids Day. Hope to see you there!

With gratitude,

Alan C. Hostrup
